Road Angels - Day 3

When Rebecca did the Vol State race (314 miles across Tennessee), she talked about the road angels. Kind hearted people who would leave coolers with goodies, chairs, etc out along the road for the runners. We have experienced Road Angels so far on our trip - mainly the kind hearted TxDot folks. Juan overdid it today and brought us apples and mangos - some of Rebecca’s faves. Then we met Armando and he brought us reflective vests and Gatorade. I know that if we have a need between now and almost Orla Armando and his peers will be there to help.

Got an earlier start to the day in order to ahead of the hot temps of the afternoon. Staying on 62 the whole way, we went through Salt Flat where we met the owner of the cafe, Shirley, which is temporarily closed while she recovers from a knee injury. She took our picture to send to the local newspaper. We enjoyed talking to her about life out here and why her family moved west generations ago. We are taking a heat break at the moment. Wind has picked up also. We are sitting at over 5,900 ft elevation too. She’s going to have to climb some more before it’s hopefully down hill soon. Rebecca took a little detour to shave a few tenths off and did some trail running for a couple miles but it’s back on 62 for a bit.

In other news, I almost made her choke laughing when at one point I told her “It’s ok, it’s a marathon not a sprint...well maybe a lot of marathons...” 😀 And, she found money along the way to be able to pay me for my services...a whopping 10 pesos coin LOL. Here are some pics from today so far. She stopped long enough for a quick selfie. I stopped by the visitors center but I am totally coming back to the Guadalupe Mountain National Park to hike the highest point in Texas. So beautiful.
